What is a Tea Bomb?

Tea bombs are small clear globes filled with a bag of tea. In this case, I used green tea bags. I also added edible flowers to my tea globes for a flavor boost and to make them beautiful.

The outer shell of my green tea bombs is made with isomalt. When you pour hot water over the green tea globes, the outer shell dissolves. This releases the green tea and edible flowers to make a delicious cup of hot tea.

My green tea bombs are a fun way to enjoy the health benefits of green tea. They also make a beautiful presentation for a garden party or brunch.

What Types of Tea Can I Use in a Tea Bomb Recipe?

You can use any tea you like to make DIY tea bombs. The tea just needs to be contained inside a tea bag. Here are the types of tea you can use in a tea bomb recipe:

I used green tea to make my tea globes for its natural health benefits. I also like the taste of green tea. However, you can also use black tea, green tea, white tea or herbal tea, as is your preference.

Black tea, for example, has more caffeine than other types of tea. Whereas herbal teas, typically do not contain any caffeine.

If you will be using your hot tea bombs recipe in the evening, then I recommend using herbal tea without caffeine. This blossoms of health tea is one of my favorite herbal tea blends. Whereas this dream tea is perfect after a large dinner or just before bed. I also enjoy fidnemed night time tea when I need a restful sleep.

You can also use more than one type of tea to make your tea globes as this tea bomb recipe makes several tea bombs. Therefore you can easily create an assortment of teas for homemade gifts or personal enjoyment.

green tea benefits

What Are Green Tea Benefits?

I choose green tea for my DIY tea bombs as green tea has these health benefits:

  • Green tea is higher in antioxidants than black tea is.
  • It’s said that green tea may help improve brain function.
  • Green tea is commonly used to aid in weight loss.
  • The antioxidants in green tea can help lower the risk of heart disease as well as offer some protection against certain types of cancer.

What is The Best Time to Drink Green Tea?

The best time to drink green tea is either in the morning or before a workout. You can also drink green tea if you need a boost during the day.

Green tea has some caffeine, so it can help you get a morning burst. The amino acid L-theanine helps the caffeine release slowly for longer lasting energy than drinking coffee.

You can also drink green tea about 90 minutes before working out. Some studies show that the EGCG and caffeine in green tea can boost the rate at which fat is oxidized.

As green tea does contain caffeine, it is not recommended that you drink green tea before going to bed.

What Are Isomalt Crystals?

Isomalt is a stable sugar substitute. It’s commonly used to make edible art decorations for cakes and other desserts.

It’s a sugar alcohol that acts similar to sugar. Sugar can crystallize in high heat, however isomalt doesn’t. This makes it easier to work with when creating cake or cookie decorations.

Isomalt is made from the sugar beet and is a natural substance. However, unlike actual sugar, it is sugar free. It only has 2.1 calories per gram, whereas sugar has 4 calories per gram. In addition, isomalt is also a vegan product.

Why Should I Use Isomalt Crystals Instead of Sugar?

While you can use sugar to make green tea bombs, I recommend using isomalt rather than sugar for several reasons:

  • Isomalt is half as sweet as sugar. If you make this hot tea bombs recipe with sugar, your tea bombs will be very sweet.
  • It is also easier to work with than sugar when you heat it and shape it. Sugar can crystallize and burn, however isomalt is more stable.
  • Isomalt is easier to melt without using water. When you melt it and shape it, it looks almost glass like. This gives this tea bombs recipe an almost globe like appearance.

Can I Color My Tea Bomb Globes?

Yes, you can color DIY tea bombs. I recommend using gel food coloring and not a liquid food coloring. Regular liquid food coloring has too much water, which can affect the isomalt. If you add too much, the isomalt can get too watery and get weak and break.

Should I Use Loose Leaf Tea or Tea Bags to Make Tea Bombs?

I recommend using a tea bag to make your tea bomb recipe. It’s easier to work with. If there is loose tea on the edge of the isomalt sphere, you may not get a good seal.

In addition, loose leaf tea will settle to the bottom of your teacup as there’s nothing to contain the tea leaves once you make a cup of tea.

If you are using loose leaf tea, you will first need to enclose each serving of tea inside a tea bag before using them to make hot tea bombs. These press ‘n brew tea bags are the perfect solution.

What Fillings Can I Add to DIY Tea Bombs?

There are number of filling you add to your DIY tea bombs. I added edible flowers to my green tea globes. However, you can also add some sugar or sugar substitute. Personally, I prefer to add sweetener by the cup and not inside the tea bombs.

Here are some other fillings you can include inside your tea globes:

You can also decorate the inside or outside of your tea globes using metallic cake paint.

edible flowers (1)

What Types of Flowers are Edible?

There are many beautiful edible flowers you can use for this project. I recommend using dried flowers only. Otherwise, the water content in the flowers can cause the flowers and tea to mold. It will also affect the integrity of the isomalt shells.

You can add one or more of the following edible flowers to your tea bomb recipe:

These flowers will give your green tea bombs some additional flavor. They also look pretty inside tea globes.

how to make tea bombs with a mold

What is the Best Mold for Tea Bombs?

You can use a silicone half sphere mold to make DIY tea bombs. Most hot chocolate bomb recipes use a 2.5 inch mold, but I prefer the smaller 2 inch diameter mold to make my hot tea bombs recipe.

Although the isomalt is half as sweet as sugar, it does still have some sweetness. A large tea bomb would be too sweet for my taste.

Tips for Making a Tea Bomb Recipe

Here are some tips to help you make DIY tea bombs:

  • Use a silicone mold to make your tea bomb recipe. The half spheres are hard to get out of plastic molds, and you might break one unmolding it.
  • The melted isomalt is very hot and can burn your skin. Do not let children assist with this step.
  • When you melt the edges to press the two halves of the sphere together, the isomalt will be very hot. Use caution and wear gloves. I recommend wearing sugar protective gloves when learning how to make tea bombs. These gloves are latex on the outside to protect the surface of your globes, but they have a cotton layer underneath to protect your skin.
  • Isomalt is sweet, but it’s not as sweet as sugar. I suggest omitting the sugar the first time you make them. Then see how much sugar you’ll need and add it to the next batch.
  • Isomalt sets up quickly, so you will have to work fast. Have all of your supplies ready before you melt the isomalt.
  • When filling the mold, try not to get isomalt over the edge of the mold. Isomalt gets very hard, and it will be difficult to create a smooth edge.
  • You can use your favorite tea bags. There’s no need to buy a specialty tea.
  • For a colored tea bomb recipe, use a gel food coloring until the isomalt is the desired color. Do not use liquid food coloring because it has too much water in it.

How to Make Green Tea Bombs

To make your DIY tea bombs, follow these instructions:

  1. Place isomalt crystals in a microwave safe bowl. Heat on high 3 to 5 minutes to melt. Microwave times will vary, so keep a close eye on it.
  2. When the isomalt is melted, the bowl and the isomalt will be very hot. Use heat proof gloves to remove the bowl from the microwave.
  3. Use a metal spoon to spoon the melted isomalt into all six of the half sphere molds. Use the back of the spoon to ensure that the mold is covered with an even layer. Isomalt sets up quickly, so you’ll need to work fast before it hardens.
  4. Place the mold in the fridge for 5 minutes to harden. I set mine on a cookie sheet to move because the mold is flimsy.
  5. Place one green tea bag and one Tablespoon of sugar into three of the green tea bombs. You will have to fold the green tea bag. Let the string from the tea bag hang outside of the sphere. Add your desired edible flowers.
  6. Heat a nonstick skillet for a few minutes to get it hot. Remove it from the stove and set on a heat proof surface.
  7. With gloved hands, take an empty half sphere and place the edge on the hot pan to melt the edge slightly. Quickly press onto a half sphere that has a tea bag in it. Repeat with the other two green tea bombs.

how to use tea bombs

How to Use Green Tea Bombs

Now you know how to make tea bombs, and it’s time to use them. To use your green tea bombs, place one green tea globe into a cup. Then pour 8 ounces of hot water over the tea globe.

The clear shell will dissolve, and the tea bag will infuse with the water to create a cup of tea. Allow the tea to steep for a few minutes then discard the tea bag.

How to Store Green Tea Bombs

Store your leftover DIY tea bombs in an airtight container on the counter. Humidity from the air can affect the isomalt shell, so it’s important to keep them dry.

Do not store extra tea bombs in the fridge. The high humidity can make them dissolve.
