How to Make Oreo Waffles with Pancake Mix

This Oreo chocolate waffle recipe is made from scratch, which is how I usually make my waffles. However, you can also make Oreo waffles from pancake mix or waffle mix in your waffle iron.

To make your homemade waffles with pancake mix, simply follow the directions on the box of pancake mix or waffle mix. Most pancake mix recipes have directions to make waffles. Although they are similar, a pancake mix recipe will not work in a waffle iron.

If your pancake mix does not have directions on how to make waffles, you can generally follow the following recipe to make waffles with pancake mix:

2 cups pancake mix
1 ½ cup water
1 egg
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Whether you use the recipe on the box or the one I just listed, add the crumbs of 7 Oreos per batch and follow the directions below to make your Oreo waffles in a waffle iron.

How to Freeze Homemade Waffles

Now that you know how to make Oreo waffles, your kids will ask for them often. Make a double batch to freeze for later. After they are done cooking, place them on a cookie sheet so they are not touching.

Place the pan in the freezer until they are frozen. Then you can move them to a freezer bag and they will not stick together. To heat up, toast them like you would a store bought frozen waffle.

Tips for Making Waffles

Although homemade waffles are fairly easy to make, I have some tips for making Oreo waffles.

  • Bring the milk and egg called for in the recipe to room temperature before making the waffle mix.
  • Don’t overmix your batter. The batter should still be lumpy when you pour it. If you mix too much, the waffles can get rubbery.
  • Spray your waffle iron with olive oil or coconut oil liberally before pouring the batter. I spray between each waffle.
  • Don’t open the waffle iron before it’s ready. Otherwise, you can tear the waffle in half and have a very hard time getting it out of the machine
  • Use a food processor or blender to crush your oreos. You want them to be fine but you can sprinkle some larger pieces on top after they’ve cooked if you prefer.

What If I Don’t Have a Waffle Maker?

Not everyone has a waffle maker on hand. However, just because you don’t have a waffle maker doesn’t mean you can’t make homemade waffles. If you don’t have a waffle maker, you can use a grill pan to make your homemade waffles instead.

To make waffles in a grill pan, heat the pan over medium heat. Then grease the pan with your choice of cooking oil.

Once the grill pan is hot, pour 1/4 cup of batter for a small size pan (or 1/2 cup batter for a medium size pan) into the center of the grill.

Cook the waffles for about 3 minutes, or until the edges start to bubble. Then flip the waffles, and cook for an additional 2 minutes, or until waffles are cooked through.
